Birmingham police have arrested 22-year-old Damien McDaniel in connection to a mass shooting that left four people dead and is believed to be responsible for other shootings in the city.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond announced McDaniel has been charged with capital murder and 17 counts of attempted murder for the September 21 mass shooting in the Five Points South entertainment district. He has also been charged with murder in the death of Diontranet Brown, an innocent bystander, during a September 19 shooting at the 604 Bar and Lounge on 9th Street N.

McDaniel, along with three other suspects—Ny’Quan Lollar, Larry Rollins Jr., and Demarco Beck—has also been charged in the September 22 killing of Jamarcus Desean McIntyre on 81st Place South. Rollins Jr. faces additional charges for heroin trafficking.

Police received over 300 tips through Crime Stoppers, which they say helped crack the case. “We’ve never had that many tips in any case before. Hats off to the community,” said Thurmond.

Mayor Randall Woodfin praised the efforts, stating, “We vowed to capture every person responsible for this heinous mass shooting. We told you this is what we’d do, and this is what we did.”
