An 81-year-old Alabama woman killed when Jeep collides with tree, state troopers say

An 81-year-old Alabama woman was killed Saturday after the vehicle in which she was riding struck a tree, state troopers said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 4:16 p.m. Saturday, and claimed the life of an Opelika, Alabama, woman.

Carol L. Deangelo, 81, was fatally injured when the 2006 Jeep Cherokee, she was a passenger in, left the roadway and struck a ditch before hitting a tree.

Deangelo was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Cherokee, Barbara T. Buckner, 74, also of Opelika was injured and transported to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus, Ga., for medical treatment.

The crash occurred on U.S. 280 near the 103 mile marker, approximately one mile east of Opelika, in Lee County.
