More than $100,000 has been raised for the Alabama college baseball team, which will play for a World Series championship even when the school closes forever.
Birmingham-Southern College will close for good on May 31 on the same day that the Panthers will begin their bid to win the Division III College World Series in Eastlake, Ohio.
The World Series is from May 31 to June 6.
A GoFundMe account has been started for the team to help pay travel expenses, championship rings and other expenses. The account, which started five days ago, was looking to raise $50,000.
As of Wednesday at noon, the account has raised more than $100,000 and keeps growing.
“Help support Birmingham-Southern baseball in its historic final season!” the organizers of the GoFundMe page wrote. “BSC is steps away from the college World Series. All funds will be used for travel expenses and championship rings. Any remaining funds will go to BSC baseball staff to help in their next steps. Yeah Panthers! Forward, ever. Always. Let’s win the whole damn thing!”
