An Alabama prison transport van crashed Wednesday killing two of the seven inmate passengers, state officials said.
The Department of Corrections van was taking the inmates back to the Alexander City Community Based Facility when the accident occurred.
Killed were inmates Willie Crayton, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and Bruce Clements, who died later at a hospital.
One inmate was critically injured and several others treated for non-critical injuries, state officials said.
The wreck happened on Elder Road in Dadeville.
Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner John Hamm issued a statement after the wreck.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” Hamm said, of the friends and families of the victims. “The quick and professional response of those first on the scene is very much appreciated by the ADOC. We will be doing all we can to support the staff and inmates affected by this tragic event.”
The accident is under investigation by Alabama state troopers.
