The Alabama woman who was killed Thursday when her car plummeted from the top of a hospital parking deck has been identified as an 82-year-old woman.

Exactly what caused the accident remains under investigation.

First responders were called to Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham at approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Crews said the vehicle that plunged over the edge of the fifth floor of the hospital’s parking garage landed on its side. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene, said Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

The woman was identified as Janette Daniels Johnson of Hoover, Alabama.

It was unclear how fast Johnson was traveling or if that played a factor into why safety cables did not stop her car.
