For anyone anxious about severe weather season or just simply wanting to help others, a free program is available to train volunteer trained storm spotters.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham released the schedule for virtual and in-person classes. Each class takes about two hours to complete and is open to anyone.

The online schedule is set as follows:

• Thursday, September 28 – 6:30 p.m. – Basic
• Thursday, October 5 – 6:30 p.m. – Basic
• Thursday, October 19 – 6:30 p.m. – Basic
• Tuesday, October 24 – 1 p.m. – Basic
• Thursday, October 26 – 6:30 – Advanced

The in-person schedule includes:

• Wednesday, October 18 – 6:30 p.m. – Basic + Listening Session – Selma
• Tuesday, October 24 – TBD – Basic – Talladega

Even though we’re preparing for our fall severe weather season, we won’t have any need of spotters Tuesday. We’ll have sunny skies and hot temperatures throughout the state. We could have an isolated shower or storm resulting from the heat and humidity, but we’re not expecting anything widespread.

We are watching a disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s still several days from being anywhere near us, but it does have a very high chance of developing into a named storm.

North Alabama
