An Alabama couple has been identified as the two fatal victims of a three-vehicle accident that injured two others and kept part of an Interstate closed most of Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Alabama state troopers said married couple Jefferson S. Jones, 63, and Susan S. Jones, 58, both of Rainsville, Alabama, were killed in the accident that happened at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 459 near u.S. 280.
A local fire crew that worked the accident said multiple extrications were needed.
State troopers said the Jones’ Jeep Cherokee initially struck head-on a Mazda CX-5 driven by Kellie R. Stephenson, 39, of Irondale, Alabama. After striking the Mazda the Jones’ vehicle then struck a street sweeper driving by Lolita R. Matthews of Leeds, Alabama.
The Jones couple was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two drivers were taken to local hospitals for treatment, though the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.
