The Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) has launched an investigation into the death of an inmate at Limestone Correctional Facility.

Authorities report that 62-year-old Steven Wayne Benton was found unresponsive in his cell on Sunday. Facility staff administered life-saving measures, and Benton was transported to the Health Care Unit. Despite their efforts, medical personnel were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the facility.

Benton had been serving a life sentence for manslaughter out of Autauga County.

The ADOC Law Enforcement Services Division is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Benton’s death.
