Two men were discovered shot to death Thursday morning inside an Alabama senior living facility.

Freedom Manor, located at 1617 Fifth Ave. North is operated by the Birmingham Housing Authorities for residents aged 62 and older.

Officers from Birmingham’s North Precinct were dispatched to the scene shortly before 11 a.m. After entering a fourth-floor apartment, they found the two victims unresponsive, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced them dead at the scene.

Officials report that both men lived at Freedom Manor, and their bodies were found in the apartment of one of the victims. A friend with a key to the apartment made the discovery and called 911.

Authorities are treating the case as a double homicide, ruling out the possibility of murder-suicide. Investigators do not yet know how long the victims had been dead, and no residents have reported hearing gunfire. Autopsies will be conducted by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office to gather more information.
