An Alabama college student was injured Monday afternoon in a shootout with a campus police officer, officials said.

The shooting occurred in a stairwell on the campus of Alabama A&M University.

The person shot was identified as a student at the school.

The campus police officer was on a routine patrol when the officer heard gunshots coming from within the building the officer was checking. The shots were coming from a lower floor.

As the officer descended down to the level where the shots were heard the officer met the student, who was brandishing a weapon in the stairwell.

Gunshots were exchanged between the two.

the student was struck multiple times and was transported to a hospital. The officer was not injured.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officers will investigate the shooting as is often the case with officer involved shootings.
