Human skeletal remains were found in a residential alley Thursday afternoon, Alabama officials reported.

A passerby found the remains on the shoulder of an alley in the 1500 block of Tuscaloosa Avenue in Birmingham, Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said.

The person found the remains at approximately 1:39 p.m.

Birmingham police are investigating the discovery.

Yates said a post mortem examination will be performed Friday to potentially help identify the remains and determine a possible cause and manner of death.
