A man who led Alabama officers on a high-speed chase is now wanted in connection with a Florida murder after it was determined that the car the man was driving was stolen from a missing Florida man.

Robert Lanning 28, of Melbourne, Florida, was arrested on Sept. 4 after a high-speed car chase on Highway 431 near the Madison County line. The chase ended with a crash in downtown Guntersville at the intersection of Gunter Avenue and AL-69.

Two people, including Lanning, were injured in the crash. One victim was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lanning was also transported to the hospital and later released into the custody of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. He was then taken to the Marshall County jail and charged with attempting to elude a fugitive from justice.

On Sept. 7, officials from the Palm Bay Police Department in Florida contacted the MCSO after it was discovered that the vehicle Lanning was driving in the high-speed chase was registered in the name of the missing person, Nicholas Mitchell.

The next day, Mitchell’s body was found shot several times.

Lanning has been charged with first-degree felony murder and grand theft motor vehicle.

Lanning is being held in the Marshall County Jail on the original charge for attempting to elude officers and will be turned over to Florida officials once the case is settled.

Lanning’s girlfriend, Rene Lemos, has also been taken into custody in Kennesaw, Georgia, in connection to the case. She is waiting to be extradited to Florida on accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and grand theft auto charges.
