An Alabama convicted murderer has been given his execution date, state officials said.

James Barber who was convicted of killing a 75-year-old woman in 2001 is scheduled to be executed on July 20. Corrections officials will have a 30-hour window which ends at 6 a.m. on July 21 in which to finish his execution.

Barber is on Alabama’s death row at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama. Barber killed Dorothy Epps by striking her with his fists and a claw hammer. She had multiple skull fractures and other blunt force injuries.

Barber had originally opted to use the state’s newest nitrogen hypoxia form of execution, but since the execution method has not been finalized, a federal judge last week ordered that Barber be executed by lethal injection instead.
