Small plane crashes near airport after mechanical problem, fire officials say

A small, private plane was forced to crash land on railroad tracks Tuesday night, Alabama fire and rescue officials reported.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel said a Piper Warrior plane that is often used to train new pilots landed on CSX railroad tracks after the airplane had a mechanical problems as it approached the runway at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
The crash landing occurred in the 3300 block of Vanderbilt Road.
The student pilot and his trainer were uninjured.
