Chance of snow prompts early dismissal plan for Alabama schools

Schools said they would release students early in northwest Alabama on Tuesday as forecasters predicted as much as 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) of snow could blanket the area.

Authorities didn’t expect any major travel problems, but about a half-dozen school systems announced students would be released earlier than usual because of the weather.

The National Weather Service said showers would turn into a mixture of rain and snow as daytime temperatures fell more than 20 degrees into the mid-30s in north Alabama.

As much as 1 inch of snow was possible in northwest Alabama, forecasters said, and a dusting of about half that much was possible in the eastern Tennessee Valley counties.

Overnight temperatures were predicted in the upper 20s, with warmer temperatures to the south in central Alabama.
