They’re all lasting reminders of a friendship that began more than 70 years ago, when a high-school football star broke his leg and a kid from the rival school went to the hospital to lift his spirits.

“I tell people that I owe my very existence to Jim Nabors,” David Pursell says. “If he hadn’t done that, chances are my dad and my mom would have never met.”
