The state of Alabama has set a May 30 execution date for Jamie Mills, 50, convicted in the brutal 2004 slaying of Floyd and Vera Hill during a robbery.

The decision came from Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, following authorization by the Alabama Supreme Court last week.

Prosecutors claim Mills and his wife went to the couple’s home where he beat the couple and stole $140 and medications.

Court documents indicate that Floyd Hill, 87, died from blunt and sharp-force wounds to his head and neck, and Vera Mills, 72, died from complications of head trauma 12 weeks after the crime.

Mills’s attorneys had asked the Alabama Supreme Court to deny the execution date request while they pursue a pending claim of prosecutorial misconduct in the case. They allege that prosecutors had concealed a plea deal with Mills’ wife, which allegedly spared her from a potential death sentence. She had served as the prosecution’s main witness during Mills’ trial. However, the attorney general’s office has refuted these claims, asserting there was no pretrial agreement.
