One of the two Alabama firefighters who were shot last week inside a fire station has died, officials said.
Birmingham Firefighter Jordan Melton died Monday night from his injuries sustained during the shooting at Fire Station No. 9 in the Norwood neighborhood of Birmingham.
“My heart is hurting today,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said in a statement posted on social media. “It devastates me to share that we’ve lost our own firefighter Jordan Melton. But before I talk about Jordan the public servant, I want to celebrate Jordan the man.
“Jordan was a vibrant young brother who was full of life. He loved to talk sports as much as he loved good barbecue.
“He had a brilliant mind for business, but he was always down to lighten the mood with a joke or two. He was also a wonderful son to his mother, who has been his rock in these difficult past few days.”
Melton and fellow firefighter Jamal Jones were shot on Wednesday morning when an unknown shooter walked into an open bay door at the fire station and began shooting.
Investigators have said the shooting was a targeted attack, but have not said who was targeted or why and no suspects have been publicly identified.
