A Nashville television news reporter covering Monday’s deadly school shooting in Nashville told on-air viewser that she, too, was a survivor of a school shooting as a child.

Joylyn Bukovac, a University of Alabama graduate and a reporter for WSMV5 in Nashville, said she recalls hiding from a gunman as a middle schooler.

“Reporting on a school shooting as a school shooting survivor and now as a mom has been indescribably heart breaking. Something needs to change,” she wrote on Twitter.

Although she didn’t specify which school shooting she survived, Bukovac referenced the date February 5, 2010, the date when a shooting happened in Madison, Alabama.

“I appreciate all the support I’ve received after sharing my story. I don’t talk about it much, but I think about what happened on February 5, 2010 often. I just want people to know they aren’t alone. I also want to discuss solutions. As a mom, I am worried for the future,” she wrote on Twitter.

An Alabama teen opened fire on that date in 2010 at the Discovery Middle School in Madison, Alabama.

In that shooting Hammod Memon, shot and killed classmate Todd Brown. Memon is serving a 30-year sentence for the murder.

Monday’s shooting in Nashville claimed the lives of six victims — three 9-year-old children and three adults. Police killed the alleged shooter.
