An Alabama lawmaker faces up to 10 years in jail after being arrested on two felony charges.

On Tuesday, the Office of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the arrest of Rep. Kelvin Jamichael Lawrence (D-Lowndes County).

Lawrence, 50, faces allegations of second-degree forgery and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

The indictment claims that Lawrence intended to defraud by falsely making, completing, or altering a builder’s license. Both charges are classified as Class C felonies, which carry a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison upon conviction.

Rep. Lawrence has served in the Alabama House of Representatives since his election on November 4, 2014. He currently represents House District 69, which includes Autauga, Lowndes, Montgomery, and Wilcox counties.

The case against Lawrence is being handled by the Special Prosecutions Division of the Attorney General’s Office.
