Man charged with DUI, manslaughter after fatal Alabama wreck last year, state troopers say

An Alabama man was arrested Thursday and charged with manslaughter, DUI and other charges connected to a deadly head-on collision in May 2023, state troopers said.
Hugo Armando Roman-Ortiz, 33, of Decatur, was charged with manslaughter, DUI, no driver’s license, improper lane usage and driving thru traffic control device.
Roman-Ortiz was involved in a two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 12 a.m. Sunday, May 28, 2023, and claimed the life of a Florence man.
Kendall Lee Dean, 48, was fatally injured when the 2014 Ford Focus that he was driving collided head-on with a 2004 GMC Yukon driven by Roman Ortiz.
Dean was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Ortiz was injured and transported by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.
The passenger of the GMC, Fernando Jose-Portillo Mariano, 22, of Decatur, was also injured and transported to North Alabama Medical Hospital for treatment.
The crash occurred on Alabama 157 near Lawrence County 150, approximately 8 miles north of Moulton, in Lawrence County.
