A former Alabama school teacher has been arrested on more than a half dozen child sexual abuse charges, police said.

Richard Bailey Granger, 40, a former teacher at Helena Middle School, has been charged with seven counts of sexual abuse of a child and a single count of sodomy.

Helena police said the investigation started in December when a victim reported sexual abuse. Police said the victim was not a student at the school at which Granger worked.

Granger is no longer a teacher in Alabama and had been living in Panama City, Florida, most recently.

He was arrested in Florida and will be detained there as Alabama officials work to get him extradited to Alabama.

Details of the case against Granger were not immediately made public by investigators.

Investigators presented their findings to a grand jury in August. That grand jury returned indictments against Granger.
