Alabama’s oldest city inched up state’s list of most populated cities to the No. 2 spot Tuesday after voters approved an annexation plan in a special election.
Tuesday’s vote added just less than 20,000 new city residents, pushing Mobile to the second-most populated city in Alabama, behind only Huntsville.
It was the first time that Mobile, founded in 1702, has had a greater population than the city of Birmingham in approximately 123 years.
With the additional annexed areas, the city’s population will be 204,689, second only to the city of Huntsville with an estimated population of 216,963 — and growing.
