A 4-year-old girl was shot Thursday and in serious condition in an Alabama hospital, police reported.

Birmingham police and fire crews reported that a child was shot in the 800 block of 1st Street North on Thursday.

The girl was transported to Children’s Hospital and was last listed in serious condition and said to be fighting for her life, police said.

Detectives said the girl was shot inside an apartment and that at least one other person was inside the apartment at the time.

Police said they were still investigating, but said it was possible the girl’s shooting was accidental.
