An Alabama man will serve two years on probation after pleading guilty to shooting a neighbor’s dog and dragging the body behind his pickup truck.

Donald Gene Nix, 59, of Haleyville pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge, according to a statement from District Attorney Scott Slatton on Wednesday. A judge sentenced Nix to a one year in jail but suspended the punishment as long as he completes probation successfully.

A hearing will be held later to determine whether Nix has to pay restitution, which court records say could be about $1,400.

WIAT-TV reported that Nix was arrested in 2019 after a neighbor’s pet husky was killed after digging out of the yard. Nix was accused of tying the animal’s body to his truck with a rope and dragging it down a highway in Marion County, located in northwest Alabama.
