Alabama grandfather driving with family shot in apparent road rage incident

An Alabama grandfather, who was driving with his wife and a grandchild, was shot multiple times in an apparent road rage incident.

Two suspects are in custody after deputies from the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a gunshot wound.

The incident on County Road 59 near County Road 503 in Chilton County near Verbena, occurred at approximately 3 p.m.
When deputies arrived, they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the facial area. The man airlifted to a Birmingham hospital. His wife and grandchild were not injured in the incident.
Deputies believe the victim was shot at a stop sign after both vehicles had exited the interstate and were headed to Verbena.
Deputies later stopped a vehicle matching description given by the victims and took the two men into custody.
Rhett Brooks Churchwell and Tommie Steven Fulmer, both of Chilton County, are charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle each. They are being held without bond in the Chilton County Jail.
